How To Learn A Language

For a few months, ok more than a few, I have been toying with the option of learning German. One problem is that I do not know the best way to do this. I am not going to go to Germany to learn the language; although I would love to, this is a bit out of my desire at this point. I am also incredibly cheap and do not want to pay for a class. I would consider this if it were a better solution though. So what else is there?

There are a few software programs out there. A guy I work with said he would let me borrow his copy of Rosetta Stone if I wanted to. There are also some others I have heard about in the mix lately such as Mango and LiveMocha.

The problem is I have not tried to know a new language since I took Spanish classes in high school, so I do not know the best way to accomplish my goal of being bilingual.

So I ask the readers… What is your favorite or the best way to learn a language?

Set A Goal (Run For Fun Series)

This post is part of the Run For Fun … or Health series.

There are many reason why a person would need or want to begin running. It could be for sport, health, or shear boredom. Whatever the case might be, you may find it easier if you set a goal to not only stay motivated but also bring more personally competition into the mix.

Your goal could be simple. Perhaps you would like to get rid of the extra 75,000 pounds you have been carrying around. Feeling better and having more energy are always options. Time to relax and not think about the ups and downs of life might be one of your goals – relaxation and meditation cannot be bad for anybody. In the movie American Beauty, the main character starts running. After being asked what his motivation is he states:

I want to look good naked.

Simple and to the point. He set a goal and he stuck to it because he needed to impress himself or others.

Whatever your motivation is, sit down (ok you can stand) and decide why you are running/exercising and what you would like to get out of it. With this information you will be able to see the proper results when they come.

Can Somebody Save Too Much?

Get Rich Slowly has a nice post where a reader asks if he is saving too much. In a nutshell, this reader is in a very nice position since he is saving a large percent of his income, has a nice plan to pay off his mortgage early, and has no bad debt. The problem is that he only has a few hundred dollars of play money each month due to his aggressive savings/debt reduction. So, is he saving too much?

Short answer, never.

First of all I would like to give this reader a thumbs up for realizing current sacrifices will bring future benefits.

But it seems he is giving up some ‘happiness’ to reach these goals. Why would you make your life less enjoyable in every moment you can knowing it could end at any moment? That is a debate for another day.

Let us assume for the sake of the rest of this post he is happy with his current standard of living and is able to save more than he thinks is necessary to reach his goals. I argue just because somebody is happy with her lifestyle does not mean they need to spend as much money as they have to spend. More money does not mean one has to spend it. Enjoy your life, don’t let your money control your personality.

Summary: An illustrated novel of sorts of the people, events, stories, clubs, and organizations of the University of Portland during the 2006-07 school year. The UP yearbook.

What I thought: I only saw one issue with this finely establish piece of literature: I graduated in 2006. I am not really sure why UP decided to send me the yearbook one year after I graduated; I did not get last years. My name is not even in the Index.

Sarcasm completed.

My Quest To Find How Vancouver Is Cool

I have been living in The Couve, Vancouver, WA, for one year last week. To this day, I have no idea what makes Vancouver cool. Sure the city/area has some history, but that does not make a city cool; it just makes it interesting.

So, I am beginning a journey and will not rest until I know why this city is more than interesting. I will go forth to speak with the people in their native tongue to find culture and activity. The goal will be to determine if Vancouver should be part of the twin city Portland/Vancouver (or should I say Vancouver/Portland) metro area or just another suburb. With its small person complex as being the redheaded step child a suburb, this might be tough.

It might be a long, hard task to prove, but I am up for it. Pray for me folks. Stop me on the street to wish me luck. And if I fail, avenge my death.
